     Robert Beatty is the author of the #1 New York Times best selling Serafina series published by Disney Hyperion. The series is a spooky mystery-thriller about a brave and unusual girl who lives secretly in the basement of the grand Biltmore Estate.
     Serafina and the Black Cloak was a #1 New York Times best seller, has been on the list for more than 59 weeks. It won the 2016 Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize.
     
The second book in the series, Serafina and the Twisted Staff, became a #1 New York Times best seller in the first week of its launch and earned a “Starred Review” from Kirkus Reviews.     
     
Young readers and adults enjoy Mr. Beatty’s books.  They are being taught in over a thousand classrooms nationwide. The third book in the Serafina series, Serafina and the Splintered Heart was published last July.
     Mr. Beatty lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.  He has a wife and three daughters, who help create  his stories.

​     He loves to explore Biltmore Estate and the darkened forest trails where his novels take place. He writes full-time now, but in his past lives, Robert was an early pioneer of cloud computing, the founder/CEO of Plex Systems, the co-founder of Beatty Robotics, and the chairman/CTO of Narrative Magazine.
     In 2007, he was named an Entrepreneur of the Year. When asked about the inspiration for his books, Robert said, "Serafina's journey grew out of my desire to write a story about an unusual and heroic young girl for my three daughters."

Dr. Beverly Tyner

     Beverly B. Tyner, EdD, is an educator with more than 30 years of experience. Her career includes positions as a teacher, principal, and school district curriculum director. She was also a graduate professor and the director of student teaching at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
    In 2004, Beverly published her first book, Small-Group Reading Instruction: A Differentiated Teaching Model for Beginning and Struggling Readers, with the International Reading Association. In 2005, she published a sequel to her first book: Small-Group Reading Instruction: A Differentiated Teaching Model for Intermediate Readers, Grades 3–8.  Beverly has also produced training DVDs to accompany her books. In addition, she has published research in the Journal of Educational Psychology that supports her reading intervention model.
     Currently, Beverly is a private literacy consultant. Her work includes presenting at national and international conferences, consulting with schools and school districts, and writing curricular materials.
     Most recently, she has been assisting school districts with the implementation of Response to Intervention using her reading intervention model. Beverly is well known for her practical yet research-based models in reading instruction. She feels that her most important work continues to be with students and teachers within the classroom setting.
    Beverly resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, with her husband, Paul, and is the mother of four grown children.

  Dr. Richard Allington

     Dick is a professor of literacy studies at the University of Tennessee. He is a past-president of the International Reading Association and the Literacy Research Association. Dick and Anne McGill-Franzen were awarded the Albert J. Harris Award for their study of ameliorating summer reading loss. Together they co-edited the Handbook of Reading Disability Research and Summer Reading:Closing the Rich/Poor Reading Achievement Gap.
     He was previously the Irving and Rose Fien Professor of Education at the University of Florida. Dick is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame and the recipient of numerous awards for his contributions to understanding reading difficulties. He is the author/coauthor of several books, including What Really Matters for Struggling Readers: Designing Research-based Programs.
